The Chemistry department at Hutatma Rajguru Mahavidyalaya was established in the academic year 1977-78, nearly a decade after the college's inception. It has since become one of the largest science departments within the institution, boasting a rich history spanning 47 years of significant growth.

Situated in the science laboratory building, the department comprises three spacious laboratories. It provides instruction to students ranging from Class XI to post-graduation. The undergraduate class typically consists of around 200 students, with an additional 40 enrolled in the M.Sc. courses in Chemistry.

In September 2007, a non-grant post-graduate course in Organic Chemistry was introduced, contributing significantly to the department's overall development. Over the last sixteen years, the post-graduate results have been consistently excellent. M.Sc. students engage in projects as part of their practical coursework, producing high-quality work with the potential for research publications.

The academic performance of students has been outstanding, yielding very good results over the sixteen-year span. Many students have successfully cleared competitive examinations such as SET, NET, IIT Entrance, GATE, GRE, TOEFL, and CSIR.
