About Department of English:

The Department of English has been teaching English as a compulsory subject to various classes since the establishment of the college in 1976. Recognizing the importance and significance of English in the academic careers of our students, the institute sought permission in 1985 to start English as a special subject. Thus, the Department of English was established in June 1985. The late Prof. Manoj Bhise headed the department. English has been considered a window to the world. Since its inception, the department has focused on enhancing the communicative competence of the students and their literary perceptions. To keep pace with the changing times, the department also started Functional English as a vocational course in 1998. It has helped our students improve their linguistic and communicative skills. The academic offerings expanded further with the introduction of the Post Graduate Course in English (M.A. English) in 2001. In short, with a faculty of four, one laboratory, and offerings in B.A. and M.A. programs, the department caters to diverse linguistic and literary needs.Embark on this enriching journey with us, as we shape the enduring legacy of English literature and language at Hutatma Rajguru Mahavidyalaya.

Salient Features of the Department:

Along with a diverse array of departmental activities, including conducting short-term courses, organizing field/industrial visits, and also organizing local, state, and national seminars, with the publication of 32 full-fledged research articles and 21 abstracts in the Research Journal with ISBN No 978-93-24457-17-0. The department aligns its film screenings with the syllabus, facilitating a deeper understanding of course material. It also offers specialized guidance to support weaker students through remedial teaching initiatives. Additionally, the department provides on-the-job training programs tailored for Functional English students, enhancing their practical skills. Moreover, a conducive environment is cultivated, fostering healthy relationships between faculty and students, thereby enriching the overall learning experience.

Teaching, Learning and Evaluation:

Our department utilizes teaching methods like lectures, group discussions, PowerPoint presentations, interactive sessions, task-based learning, and e-resources, while evaluation methods encompass tests, assignments, role-playing, debates, interviews, seminar presentations, short quizzes, and open book tests.

Department Highlights:

Former Prof. A. G. Kulkarni and Dr. V. Y. Raskar have contributed to the restructuring of syllabi and curriculum design for undergraduate and postgraduate English courses at Savitribai Phule Pune University. Dr. V. Y. Raskar achieved recognition for SPPU as a P.G., M.Phil., & Ph.D. institution in 2018, subsequently receiving a nomination as a Member of the Board of Studies in English at SPPU. Prof. S.S. Alhat achieved the milestone of passing the NET examination thrice and was also awarded a Ph.D. degree from BAMU, Aurangabad. Various students in our department have achieved immense success, qualifying in M.Phil., Ph.D., SET, and NET exams, while others have excelled in various professional roles such as head of HR, sales manager, lawyers, teachers, assistant professors etc.
